The Zen Center of New York - Fire Lotus Temple is a Zen Buddhist center for practitioners in all walks of their spiritual journey. The Center follows the Mountains and Rivers Order, a Western Zen Buddhist lineage established by John Daido Loori Roshi. The Temple is made up of many students and teachers, and in visiting ZCNY, you’ll find that every member acts as both. In the same way knowledge is passed from teacher to student, the Mountains and Rivers Order is dedicated to passing down the dharma teachings from one generation to the next, making the ZCNY the ideal community for Zen students of all experience levels.
The Temple is located in the Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn, NY within walking distance from almost all subway lines and the LIRR around Atlantic Ave, Nevins St, and Pacific St. The Temple is in a beautiful historic building located on a quiet street. The Temple also provides any necessary materials for sitting in practice and attending classes. Also, when visiting the Temple for a session or a meditation, be sure to stick around afterwards as members, students, and teachers of the Temple gather outside the building to meet and socialize.
The Mountains and Rivers Order (MRO) is a Zen Buddhist organization that is based on the teachings and practices of the Soto Zen tradition. The organization was founded by John Daido Loori Roshi (1931-2009), a Zen master and teacher who was trained in the tradition of Taizan Maezumi Roshi. Loori Roshi established the MRO in the 1980s and it has since become a leading Zen organization in the United States.
