the Path of

Tibetan

Tibetan Buddhism is a form of Buddhism that developed in Tibet and the surrounding Himalayan region. It is based on the teachings of the Buddha, as well as the Tibetan translations of Indian Buddhist texts and the teachings of Tibetan masters. The goal of Tibetan Buddhism is the attainment of enlightenment, or the realization of one's true nature and the end of suffering. This is seen as a process of purification and transformation, in which practitioners cultivate mindfulness and insight in order to gain a deeper understanding of the impermanent and interconnected nature of all things. Tibetan Buddhism is known for its use of various meditation techniques and visualizations, as well as its emphasis on the cultivation of compassion and the practice of devotion. It also places a strong emphasis on the role of the guru, or spiritual teacher, in the spiritual path.

Tibetan Buddhism is practiced by millions of people around the world and is divided into various schools and traditions, such as the Nyingma, Kagyu, Gelug, and Sakya. Each of these traditions has its own unique practices and teachings.

Origin and History

The founder of Nalandabodhi, Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, is recognized as a master in the Karmapa line. He received candidacy at age three while living at the Rumtek monastery in Sikkim, the official residence of the exiled Karmapas, under the 16th Karmapa. The 16th Karmapa and the Dalai Lama formally recognized Rinpoche as the 7th incarnation in the Dzogchen Ponlop lineage. Rinpoche  dedicated his life to receiving lineage transmissions from Buddhist masters from Tibet’s pre-exile generation, and later from some of the greatest masters of the 20th century. Rinpoche was also recognized as the heart son of Gyalwang Karmapa, connecting him to both the Kagyu and Nyingma lineages.

When Rinpoche was only a teenager, he began his pedagogy at Buddhist centers throughout Europe and the United States in the 1980s and early 1990s, which were some of the formative years for the growth of Buddhist teachings in the West. Nalandabodhi began in 1997 as a response to his student’s requests for more formal, personal teachings from Rinpoche. This spiritual community has since grown into a globally recognized network for Buddhist teachings and practice.
