Tibetan Buddhism is a form of Buddhism that developed in Tibet and the surrounding Himalayan region. It is based on the teachings of the Buddha, as well as the Tibetan translations of Indian Buddhist texts and the teachings of Tibetan masters. The goal of Tibetan Buddhism is the attainment of enlightenment, or the realization of one's true nature and the end of suffering. This is seen as a process of purification and transformation, in which practitioners cultivate mindfulness and insight in order to gain a deeper understanding of the impermanent and interconnected nature of all things. Tibetan Buddhism is known for its use of various meditation techniques and visualizations, as well as its emphasis on the cultivation of compassion and the practice of devotion. It also places a strong emphasis on the role of the guru, or spiritual teacher, in the spiritual path.
Tibetan Buddhism is practiced by millions of people around the world and is divided into various schools and traditions, such as the Nyingma, Kagyu, Gelug, and Sakya. Each of these traditions has its own unique practices and teachings.
Jewel Heart, founded in Michigan in 1988, is the genesis of Gelek Rimpoche’s lifelong work in preserving Tibetan Buddhist teachings in the Western world. As one of the great Tibetan Buddhist masters of the 20th and 21st century, Rimpoche was recognized for his renowned memory, insight, and spiritual judgment at the age of four. Rimpoche was honored as an incarnate lama or “spiritual leader”, indicating the highest level of spiritual development. He was raised in Drepung Monastery under the tutelage of Tibet’s greatest living spiritual teachers. After escaping India from Communist Chinese invasion, Rinpoche established organizations to preserve ancient Tibetan Buddhist teachings from ruin. Jewel Heart’s conception and legacy is rooted in this mission–to ensure the survival of these essential teachings. The Senior and Juniors Masters to His Holiness the Dalai Lama directed Rimpoche to teach Western students in the late 1970’s, and such was born Jewel Heart, with centers first established in Europe and Asia, and eventually moving to Michigan in 1988.
Gelek Rimpoche was born in Tibet and was recognized at a young age as a tulku, or reincarnated master. He was trained in the Gelug tradition by some of the most renowned Tibetan lamas of the time, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and received a traditional education in Tibetan Buddhism. After completing his studies, Gelek Rimpoche served as a teacher and spiritual guide in Tibet and other countries in Asia.
In the 1980s, Gelek Rimpoche left Asia and traveled to the United States, where he founded Jewel Heart. The organization was established as a way to share the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism with people in the West and to provide a supportive environment for individuals to learn about and practice Buddhism.
